Meet Matt Buchan - 2025 LET Scholar

Matt Buchan is the senior winemaker & operations manager at Deep Woods Estate, one of Australia’s most prestigious and recognised wine producers.

Matt completed his 25th vintage in 2025. He has been privileged enough to work alongside some of the most highly regarded industry professionals, gaining invaluable experience, both internationally and at home in Australia.

Margaret River is a winemaker’s paradise to Matt, supplying him with all the necessary tools to create wines that exhibit regionality, balance and class. As a strong advocate for the region, Matt regularly travels outside of WA as a senior wine show judge to broaden his winemaking perspective and share his own expertise.

Matt is a recipient of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW scholarship, a DUX of the AWRI advanced wine assessment course, and more recently, a WCA wine industry mentor, where he seeks to inspire and support up-and-coming winemakers at the early stages of their careers.

Becoming a Len Evans Tutorial scholar has long been at the pointy end of Matt’s career goals, and he’s looking forward to expanding on his understanding of Australian wine history in relation to the great wines of the world.
